Its name, meaning 'Fort of the Lion,' originates from the bravery displayed during the famous Battle of Sinhagad in 1670, where Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare fought valiantly. While the fort was captured, Malusare lost his life, leading Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to famously lament, 'Gad ala pan Simha gela' (The fort was won, but the lion was lost).
