The original structure was built by Shahaji Bhosale, Shivaji Maharaj's father, in 1630 AD for his wife Jijabai and young Shivaji. It was here that Shivaji Maharaj spent his formative years, receiving education and inspiration under the guidance of his mother. Lal Mahal is also famously associated with a pivotal event in Shivaji Maharaj's life: the daring attack on Mughal general Shaista Khan in 1663. Shivaji Maharaj and his men infiltrated the heavily guarded palace, surprising Khan and inflicting injuries before he fled, a bold move that significantly boosted Maratha morale.
While the original palace faced destruction over time, the Pune Municipal Corporation meticulously reconstructed it in 1988, striving to preserve its historical essence. Today, visitors can explore the exhibits housed within the reconstructed walls. These include large oil paintings and photographic depictions illustrating key moments from Shivaji Maharaj's life, artifacts of historical significance, a statue dedicated to his mother, Jijabai, and a model of the formidable Raigad Fort, which later became his capital.
